How it came about Often towards sunset the breeze first slackens and then completely disappears leaving the water quite calm. The sun is low and the land is becoming a silhouette. The contrasts are high. Suddenly a boat passes, leaving its wake. The waves are smooth, glossy but steep so they reflect the bright sky and the dark land. It is all in motion, an amazing rhythm of reflections. For some years I had the intention to make a painting of this but the performance of the waves only lasts a matter of seconds. Last summer I always had my camera ready to go up on deck and capture it. Not so simple, passing boats were often too far away or going in the wrong direction. I did collect many photographs of waves and reflections so in the studio I could construct a subject that would have made a perfect photograph. |
