Oil Painting on Canvas. 36 x 48 inches
A white-knuckle situation experienced by many sailors in Maine, hopefully not too often. On a number of situations I had set a course to clear some rocks to leeward but as time passed the boat seemed to experience a magnetic attraction to them. I then realised the wind and tide were carrying me on a near-collision course. My concern would be that tacking to avoid them might fail with the boat pointing into the wind ("in irons"). With sails flapping, the boat might be carried by the tide onto the ledge.
One solution is to point the boat to miss the rocks narrowly but sufficiently. The boat will then sail faster and be carried less by the tide. The other solution is to start the engine!
